Sadly I have not made that headline up. The EU has indeed been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I had thought it wasn’t possible to devalue this “Prize” any further than is had been by the award to Barack Obama, but I was wrong.

Where was the EU, or even major nations like Germany, when Muslims were suffering genocide in the former Yogoslavia? It was the Americans (not even their own continent) and the British who were defending Muslims from being killed. Now that's truly principled altruism.
I'm trying to think how the EU (which does not even have an army) has brought about Peace somewhere in the world, doing so in such a distinctive way as to be "the best of the best" and therefore deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize.

EU bringing peace ? Total garbage. As Mr Smith says it was difficult to take the award seriously before..... I see a lot of peace on the streets of Greece and Spain at the moment. Utter tripe.

Adrian: Quite. I’ve always liked an RAF recruitment advert which shows two of our Harriers flying top cover for Hercules transports dropping emergency supplies to refugees in the former Yugoslavia which ends with the slogan “Their country needs you”:
